To ask the Secretary of State for International Development what steps his Department is taking to persuade the Burmese Government to release political prisoners.

During their recent visits to Burma the Prime Minister, the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, my right hon. Friend the Member for Richmond (Yorks) (Mr Hague) and the Secretary of State for International Development, my right hon. Friend Mr Mitchell, have all pressed President Thein Sein, and other senior Ministers, for the release of all political prisoners. UK officials also regularly raise the issue of political prisoners with the Burmese authorities.
