Members of the Uppingham community have called for an investigation into allegations that a local business which inquired to Rutland County Council about building a new business in the town was advised that planning permission for the venture would be refused but that it could be offered a financial incentive to move to Oakham.

Commenting on the allegation Neighbourhood Plan lead (Cllr) Ron Simpson said, "If this allegation is true it is a very serious matter. I have heard rumours of such offers before, but this is the first example during my time.  Uppingham has a number of sites suitable for such a development. It is entirely inappropriate that public funds be offered as an incentive to divert employment opportunities from Uppingham by an individual  who has the power to influence planning permissions.  I urge the County Council  to arrange an independent investigation into the matter."
