Oakham Santa Fun Run organised by the Rotary Club of Rutland in association with Oakham Town Council Video and Photographs

Oakham Santa Fun Run organised by the Rotary Club of Rutland in association with Oakham Town Council.

was held again this year, on 4th of December 2022

This event allows everybody to have loads of fun and to get in the Christmas spirit.

It also gave an opportunity for local charities, schools and individuals to raise monies via sponsorship for their own good causes and for those of Rotary.

This event was held in conjunction with the Oakham Town Council Christmas Fair so a good day out was assured.

Santa's enjoyed mulled wine and mince pies when they had completed their run.

The Rotary Club of Rutland was founded in 1950 as the Rotary Club of Oakham, and changed its name in the early 1970s when the Rutland county name was under threat. The membership has always reflected a wide diversity of local residents with a commitment to ‘Service Above Self’ and the desire to put something back into the community.

Rutland Rotary is a very social club as well as supporting charitable causes. They always looking for new members, both men and women, who can help with their work as well as having fun.  Please get in touch via the contact their page if you are interested in more details.

Oakham Mayor Zoe Nealson contacted the Pride organiser in her private capacity expressing a concern that a section of the LGBTQ+ community was not family friendly.

The organiser posted this concern in the LGBT+ in Oakham & Rutland Facebook group. The Mayors wife Rachael Nealson responded to comments and suggestions of discrimination.

The part of the community that was described as not family friendly was Kink. I found the whole debate rather odd.

I don't support the suggestion that Rutland's First Pride Event should not be advertised as family friendly.

I also don't support Rachael Nealson's suggestion that a tent is set up for only over 18's who maybe into Kink ("people dressed as puppies and pulled along on a lead".)  I believe that would not be inclusive and could be considered discrimination. I do understand children ask questions, but surely adults know how to respond appropriately to young children when they ask why a person is dressed in a certain.

The two posts appear to have been deleted by the group admin. In one the Mayor did make it very clear that her concerns were not that of Oakham Town Council.

Rutland Big Band Performed the last band concert of 2021 in Cutts Close Oakham Rutland Today

Melton Band performed in Cutts Close Oakham Rutland Yesterday (12th September 2021) Next week Rutland Big Band Prom in The Park.

Melton Band performed in Cutts Close Oakham Rutland Yesterday (12th September 2021)

The turn out started well, unlike other weeks this year people soon gave up their seats and departed in large numbers. This can be seen from the photo I took around 3pm and the video around 45 minutes later. Some comments heard were not the best for the band. There was sympathy for one of the band members who performed after very recently suffering a heart attack.

Oddly most of the band decided the grass in front of the Bandstand was a car park, they did move all but one car to the proper car park when asked by the council, the red car that remained could not be removed because the band members wife had gone elsewhere. I often wonder why bands think it is fine to drive their cars through our park. They don't do it to get to the Bandstand in Play Close Melton.

The band played quite a dreary set and this could be felt in the atmosphere in the park. The were long gaps between each piece played. The last two pieces played were much more lively, I assume this was to ensure no one was left sleeping in the park over night.

Next week is the last band concert in the park for the year. Rutland Big Band will be performing Prom in the Park.

This years band concerts have been very popular after Oakham Town Council dropped some of the regular boring bands. Yesterdays performance and turnout was a little reminder of the disastrous past.

I think wrinkle rock is missed a lot, unfortunately most of those band members are now too old to perform so I am told.
