Oakham in Bloom, New Flower Bed Outside Oakham

The butcher bike was stolen, Oakham in Bloom
say they may replace it.

It's not good the bike was stolen, but it has removed
a distraction to motorists from a busy road junction.

It's the first time I have not like a Oakham in Bloom creation
which they describe as a flower bed.

I don't think much thought has gone into this project just behind
the rock on the right is a marker for a electricity cable, what is going
to happen when that need replacing or repairing?

Oakham in Bloom, Uppingham in Bloom, East Midlands in Bloom, Winners

Oakham won gold award in the town category and Uppingham, won a silver gilt award.

The volunteers do a great job here in Oakham making our town look good. With their
interestingly planted flower beds especially the one outside the library.

Oakham Town Council provide the horrid hanging baskets.

I have often wondered though why as a town we always seem to win these Bloom
prizes, as I and others often see many fantastic displays in other towns who don't
win.

Then  I found out why, Oakham was nominated by East Midland in Bloom for
Britain in Bloom and the local tell us, there are only eight other nominations for
Britain in Bloom and that's taken from the whole country. The simple fact is those
other towns don't even bother entering their own regional contests.

This year Oakham Town Council spent a fortune on new "ugly" hanging baskets.
The judges have gone and the watering contract appears to have ended and we
are left with some quite shabby looking planters and the baskets that had reached
their prime and are now slowly drying out.

As for the watering, I can not understand why Oakham Town Council thought
it was good to buy those new pots/baskets  the supplier said they require less watering
so why does the Town Council pay them £6,000 for watering? Costing three times as
much as previous years?

well Done Oakham in Bloom, gold east midlands in bloom 2012

Oakham In Bloom  has been awarded FIRST PLACE and a Gold Certificate in the Town Category of East Midlands In Bloom 2012!

Oakham Mayor Cllr Dewis said he probably should not be mentioning Uppingham at Oakham Town Council meeting. probably best not when he gives out incorrect information.

He congratulated the town for receiving gold when they only received a silver.

Oakham in Bloom said: It's a great day for Rutland as Uppingham also won the Small Town category and a Silver Gilt Certificate :-)

Oakham In Bloom Peacock Has Landed, bad luck for Rutland County Council? Paint It & Plant It, Photos

Oakham In Bloom Peacock Has Landed, Will this launch bad luck for Rutland County Council?

In some countries despite its beauty the Peacock is a symbol of bad luck and especially to those
the rear of the tail faces.

The Peacock has been salvaged from the grounds of the closed HMP Ashwell and installation is
happening at the rear of the County Library with the rear of it tail feathers pointing in the direction
of Rutland County Council.

If all the worldwide superstitions are true thank goodness they chose not to face the centre of the town

I look forward to seeing and photographing the planted sculpture.

The foundations were laid using child labour from
Oakham School who kindly volunteered
today's installation was carried out by
local company Paint It & Plant It

Well done Oakham in Bloom Workers, Britain in Bloom, Silver Gilt

Teresa Thompson said Sadly no win for Oakham this time, but still a very creditable Silver Gilt medal. Our category, the Towns, was the most hard-fought and highly scored of the entire competition, so we mustn't feel too bad about it. Apparently the judges were most impressed with the work of our gardening volunteers and encourage us to do lots more of the same! A few areas need a slight rethink though, so the Committee will be working on those over the next months.

I say well done to all the gardening volunteers and keep up the good work.
Teresa Thompson also says: Please remember the Big Replant on Sunday 8th October, beginning at 9.30am at the library and come if you can, equipped with trowels, ready for Action. The more hands we have, the sooner all will be done, so I hope to see you then.
